Grant County was created on October 14, 1864 from Wasco County and Umatilla County. This particular county was named in honor of Ulysses S. Grant (1822 - 1885), army officer who served in the Oregon Territory; a Union general in the American Civil War at the time of the county's creation; and subsequently President of the United States (1869–1877).
